Abercrombie & Kent has been operating tented safaris in Kenya for over 30 years, and we are convinced that the tented safari experience offers one of the most original and exciting ways possible to see Africa.
In your own exclusive mobile camp away from the lodges and permanent camps, you have a wild corner of the continent all to yourself-just as early explorers and safari-goers did before the advent of travel facilities. Your private camp moves with you; while you are game-viewing or travelling during the day your staff breaks camp, moves to your next destination and ensures that all is ready-from romantic kerosene lanterns to a pot of hot coffee on the campfire-for your return. The luxury of experiencing all the sights, smells and sounds of wild Africa at close range and without the distractions of civilization is a real privilege and delight, especially when combined with the creature comforts a well-organized camp can provide.
In our desire to make the tented safari experience available to the widest possible range of travellers, A&K offers two types of tented programs in Kenya and Tanzania. Both have been planned and outfitted with the benefit of our years of experience, and both provide all the romance and excitement of camp life in the African bush. But there are differences.
Our innovative "Under Canvas"style camps are featured in the Kenya Under Canvas and Tanzania Under Canvas itineraries. While some obvious luxuries have been pared to make "Under Canvas" itineraries more accessible, comfort, safety and service have been zealously maintained. For example, Kenya Under Canvas groups are limited to just 24 travellers and the maximum for Tanzania Under Canvas is only 18; the client/staff ratio is two-to-one; you are accompanied by a professional safari escort; and soft drinks and bottled water are included with your excellent meals. Economical, informal, activity-oriented "Under Canvas" safaris make a perfect holiday.
Our Classic Tented Safaris, Kenya Hemingway and Tanzania Hemingway, are truly evocative of the classic safari adventures of the past. These are undoubtedly the finest tented programs available in Africa. For attentive service, campside comfort and plain old-fashioned style, they have no equal. These opulent itineraries, limited to just 12 travellers per departure, are the cornerstone of Abercrombie & Kent's reputation as the finest tented safari operator on the African continent.
Read through the comparisons which follow, and choose the category most suited to your tastes and style. Whether you choose a safari "Under Canvas" or a Classic Tented Safari, be assured that your program is "simply the best" of its kind.
Tented safaris form a very special sub-set under the overall heading of tailor-made travel from A&K. As we are fond of saying, if you travel to Africa and never sleep in a tent, you've been on holiday, not on safari. In 1962 we sent our first travellers out into the bus on tented safaris and today Abercrombie & Kent is recognized as East Africa's premier planner of tented safaris in the original, old-fashioned, romantic style.
While many of our scheduled itineraries include time spent "under canvas," tented safari is particularly suited for the independent traveller: self-sufficient and mobile, it can operate in almost any destination, fit nearly any schedule and focus on any special interest. Your camp moves with you - tents, furniture, kitchenwares, water and food, lanterns and everything else necessary to your comfort in the bush-moves to your next destination while you are out exploring during the day. You return to a new campsite set up by skilled A&K staff.
Planning your own tented safari is an immensely satisfying experience, and A&K's "on site" offices provide a distinct advantage in their ability to monitor variables such as weather and wildlife movement. In addition, A&K maintains a staff of Africa's best escort-guides, professionals who match a deep empathy for nature with a demonstrated ability to care for travellers in the wild. Add an accomplished camp staff (including wonder-workers in the fireside kitchen), custom-designed safari vehicles and fully-equipped tents, and tented safari travellers need do nothing but surrender to the many charms of life on safari.
Sample costs for tented safaris appear below; when estimating cost for a safari of this type, please note that the daily rate will be charged for one set-up day before and one take-down day after the actual duration of your holiday. Your travel agent or A&K's Independent Travel Department can provide additional information, or begin the planning process for you.
